Oil Price Volatility and Supply Chain Pressures Ripple Through Craft Brewing, Independent Brewers Face Uncertain Costs
As US President Donald Trump orders an investigation into major energy companies over petrol price movements, the broader energy market volatility is raising fresh concerns for independent craft brewers across Texas and the Gulf Coast, who rely on stable input costs to sustain their operations and price offerings fairly to beer enthusiasts.
Trump wrote on social media that he had expected to see petrol prices fall "a lot faster than what I'm seeing" and ordered the Department of Justice to "immediately start looking into this," accusing major oil firms of not reducing pump prices proportionally as wholesale oil costs fell on global markets. He did not name any oil firms in the post.
The wholesale oil market turmoil began when Iran responded to US-Israeli strikes on 28 February by effectively shutting the critical Strait of Hormuz waterway, severely disrupting shipments of oil and gas and causing energy prices to soar. Brent crude, the global wholesale oil benchmark, reached almost $120 (£91) a barrel in May as the conflict continued. Prices have since fallen—on Wednesday, Brent dropped below $74 a barrel—but it remains above the roughly $70 a barrel mark it was at before the conflict.
The American Petroleum Institute (API), which represents the oil and gas industry in the US, countered that petrol prices "don't move in lockstep with crude oil." An API spokesperson added that the conflict is "still affecting supply, refining and inventories."
For craft brewers like those operating in Houston, energy cost swings translate directly into operational pressures. Transportation, refrigeration, and production all depend on stable energy pricing. When wholesale costs spike—as they have in the past months—breweries face cascading expenses in ingredient sourcing, distribution, and facility operations. These pressures affect everything from the cost of hops and grains imported through Gulf ports to the price of chilling the Beer Garden on a summer evening or powering the fermentation tanks that produce beloved local seasonals.
The API's statement that "our industry shares the goal of delivering relief at the pump and restoring stability to global energy markets" underscores a reality that independent breweries understand intimately: stable supply chains and predictable costs are essential to sustaining craft beer culture and keeping full-flavored, locally-made beer accessible to Houston and Texas beer lovers.
The average price of regular gasoline in the US has fallen to about $3.93 a gallon after topping $4 a gallon in April, its highest since 2022, but remains well above pre-war levels. Similarly, the US wholesale oil benchmark, WTI crude, dipped to $70 a barrel on Wednesday but remains higher than before the conflict when it traded at around $60 a barrel.
Trump's comments echo similar accusations faced by UK oil firms following the Iran war's onset, though the UK competition regulator said in May there was no widespread evidence of price gouging, noting that average profit margins were "broadly unchanged" between February and March.
