Award-Winning Nebraska Brewery Closes as Craft Brewing Industry Faces Rising Costs and Market Pressures

The independent craft brewing industry is navigating a challenging period, with structural pressures from ingredient costs and market dynamics threatening even established, award-winning operations. The closure of Zipline Brewing Company in Lincoln, Nebraska—once the state's largest craft brewery—underscores the fragility facing craft brewers across North America who are committed to producing full-flavored, quality beer without the economies of scale of major producers.

The broader craft beer market contracted in 2025. Craft brewer volume sales declined by 4%, while retail dollar sales decreased by 2.8% to $28 billion, which accounts for 24.8% of the $113 billion U.S. beer market, according to the Brewers Association. The number of operating craft breweries also declined by 2.9% to 9,578 in 2025.

Rising ingredient costs have emerged as a primary threat to independent breweries. "Raw material costs have emerged as a significant constraint in the North American craft beer market, with substantial increases in the prices of essential ingredients," according to a 2026 North American Craft Beer Market Report by Mordor Intelligence. The report added that "the impact of these cost increases has been particularly severe on production economics, forcing breweries to revise their pricing strategies and operational models."

Zipline Brewing, which opened in 2012, abruptly ceased operations on June 11, closing its brewery, taproom, and beer hall without advance notice to employees. The Lincoln location at 2100 Magnum Circle announced the closure via a notice posted outside the taproom. A second venue, Zipline Beer Lounge at 5740 Hidcote Drive, Suite B, also shut down immediately. Approximately 20 employees were terminated in the abrupt closure, according to KOLN-TV.

The brewery's closure notice captured the mounting pressures facing independent craft producers: "The brewery industry has faced tremendous headwinds since the pandemic, and those obstacles have only gotten harder as inflation and other rising expenses have squeezed our ability to produce world-class beers, at reasonable prices and still keep our lights on."

The shutdown came without warning—operations continued normally until workers were actively brewing a fresh batch when all equipment was shut down before the process was completed, according to Nebraska Public Media.

Zipline had earned recognition for its craft. The brewery's Copper Alt won a gold medal at the prestigious Great American Beer Fest in 2015, and secured gold medals in 2022 at the U.S. Open Beer Championship and in 2023 at the World Beer Cup Competition in Nashville, sponsored by the Brewers Association. The taproom offered 12 beers on tap year-round Wednesday through Sunday.

The company's restaurant, Zipline Tap & Grill at 575 Fallbrook Boulevard in Lincoln, will continue operating. "As we evolve into a restaurant-focused organization, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue welcoming customers in this next chapter," the company said in a Facebook post. The brewery was owned by managers of AKRS Equipment Solutions, and had been listed for sale prior to closure, according to KOLN.
